RH: What inspired you to become an actress?

JL: The shortest answer I can give you is my faith in Jesus. I never planned on becoming an actress. I had thought about it as a kid, but no more or less than any other child. In college, I auditioned for a film on a whim, booked the female lead, and fell in love with the cast and crew. I figured it was just a fun experience, but the Lord began speaking to me about it. I’m not afraid to share my faith, and more importantly than that, I’m not afraid of what the church thinks of me. God alone is my judge. I don’t have to boast about what I’ve done or how pure I am. That’s worthless. What really matters is loving people because Jesus loves people. I have no problem hanging out with people who have completely different, or even opposing ideals than me. Especially if I can help lessen the pain they’ve encountered from a bad experience in church. And please don’t misunderstand. There are SO many WONDERFUL churches out there that are so legitimate, and loving, who are following after God’s own heart. My church is like that. I go to C3, Los Angeles. There are C3’s all over the globe, and they’re the real deal. But that’s what acting came down to for me. Studying people, telling stories that will make people laugh or cathartically deal with loss and loving people with abandon.

What is Eat Play Love about? And who do you play in it?

I play Dr. Carly Monroe. Described in the script as 26 years old, a nerdy but adorable veterinarian in a shapeless white doctor’s coat. She wears glasses and a long ponytail.

Eat Play Love is about a young Veterinarian named Dr. Carly Monroe who moves back to her hometown to take over her grandfather, Isaac’s (Lee Majors) veterinarian clinic. Isaac says he’s retiring, but he’s the type of man who loves his job and may never retire. Carly and her grandfather have an ADORABLE relationship. She splits her time between her grandfather’s animal clinic and volunteering at the Forever Friend’s dog shelter. Forever Friend’s Shelter is run by brother and sister duo, Michelle (Lucie Guest) and Dan Landis (Jason Cermak). Michelle is Carly’s childhood best friend, and Dan is Carly’s high school sweetheart. Carly is still in love with Dan, and vice versa, though both Dan and Carly deny their feelings. Plus, Dan agreed to marry his glamorous TV reporter girlfriend and mean girl, Kristi Waters. Hilariousness ensues when Michelle gives Carly a makeover to get Dan’s attention. After all, it’s every girl’s dream for her brother to marry her best friend. And a love story unfolds from there.

One thing I love about Eat Play Love is that post make-over, Carly incorporates her old look into the new. It’s who she is, and she doesn’t pretend to be something fake. Which I LOVE. So this movie has a positive message to young girls. Glasses don’t make you unattractive. Being your authentic self, and being kind and intelligent is what really makes you beautiful.

The other thing I love about Eat Play Love is I got to show my physical comedy skills!! I’m not sure how much of my slap-stick will make it into the final cut, but it was fun to exercise my chops and get the whole crew laughing.

Lilley came on board Eat, Play, Love via her friendship with Wolf, who thought of her when she read the script. “She got hired to direct. The character Carly Monroe is nerdy and adorable and because Christie knows me personally, she said, ‘I know the perfect person for this.’ We loving call each other the dynamic duo. We love each other,’” she laughs.

Lilley was thrilled to work with Majors and Wagner. “It was incredible. Talk about two icons. It was pretty amazing. Before we started, I got an e-mail from the Lee Majors introducing himself, telling me he was looking forward to working with me and [he’d] done research on [my] work,” she recalls. “He said, ‘I’m sorry in advance if I mess up, wink wink.’ I almost fell out of my chair. I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? You’re the Six Million Dollar Man. Hopefully I don’t forget my words when I’m gazing into your eyeballs.’ He has a fast sense of humor. He’s has such a good sense of humor. He’s adorable.”

“Lindsay Wagner is every woman’s woman. I think she inspires women just as much today as she did in the 70s. She’s a humanitarian and she’s lovely and she’s a giving performer. She’s so interesting. What I loved about Lindsay is that I appreciate a woman who is very pro-women and strong but also feminine. She’s not trying to be a man. She’s trying to be a strong female. That is a Lindsay Wagner to a T. I love her. She’s a fascinating, brilliant lady.”
